Castlemaine Camera Club
Tutorial: Sharpness - Page 7

This is a line of matchsticks; each match is 5cm from the next.
The camera was focused on the match in the middle, i.e. the one with a black line marked just under the head.
The camera was approx. 60cm from the match in focus (some foreground has been cropped out as it was un-necessary for the illustration).
The camera lens was at aperture f1.8; it can be easily seen even the matches only 5cm from the target match are out of focus due to very limited Depth Of Field.

In the photo below, the lens is now "stopped-down" (i.e. the aperture closed) to a smaller aperture f5.6.
The matches on either side of the target match are in much better focus; even the match two matches to the right of the target match is moderately clear.
The Depth Of Field has increased considerably compared to that at aperture f1.8.

The photo below taken at aperture f16 shows a much better Depth Of Field than that at f5.6, and a huge improvement over that taken at f1.8.
